Our Sustainability
Our Sustainability
Sustainability has always been central to our mission at Narrative Food, from our work to reduce food miles through farm-to-table delivery in Los Angeles to our longheld support for regenerative organic agriculture. Today, we are proudly working to reduce our emissions at every level of our supply chain.
Certified by The Climate Label
As a Certified B Corp since 2013, we have a longstanding commitment to social and environmental impact.
When we became Climate Neutral Certified with The Climate Label in 2024, our total carbon inventory was estimated at just 15 tonnes of CO2e. That means we generated less than .2 kg of CO2e per dollar of revenue.
We addressed those emissions immediately by buying and retiring an equal amount of high-quality, verified carbon and clean energy credits to keep roughly 16,800 pounds of carbon in the ground.
In addition to planting mangrove trees to enhance biodiversity in Mida Creek Kenya, this VCS and CCBA certified Southern Cardamom project contains 2000+ hectares of pristine mangrove forest and helps to protect and enhance a further 50,000+ hectares of mangroves (the largest contiguous mangrove forest ecosystem in the Gulf of Thailand) that directly surround the project boundary. They aim to restore multiple ecosystems to sequester more carbon emissions than we create, with a focus on the ocean and the life it supports.
The Envira Amazonia Project is a VCS and CCBS designed REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and (Forest) Degradation) project in the State of Acre, Brazil which aims to protect up to 200,000 hectares of tropical rainforest. Furthermore, the Envira Amazonia Project will simultaneously preserve rich biodiversity and a wide range of ecosystem services, provide direct benefits to local communities, and mitigate the release of ~12.6 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the first 10 years of the Project.
In addition to cutting our direct and indirect emissions in half by 2030, we adopted several action plans to reduce emissions from our supply chain over the next two years.
We invest in high-quality packaging that is beautiful and sustainable. Our custom-printed gift box is made in the USA with 100% recycled content (including 95% post-consumer waste that has been diverted from landfills, FSC® Certification for responsible forestry, and absolutely ZERO plastic). We hope you’ll enjoy, save, and reuse your gift box for as long as you’d like – and when you’re ready, it will be accepted by most curbside recycling programs. We also include eco-friendly collateral, printed tissue paper, and shred for safe shipping – all of which is recyclable or compostable.
Carbon-neutral shipping is always free at Narrative Food. For every order we ship, we work with Shopify Planet to compensate for the carbon we generate. They use a formula built by data scientists to calculate the estimated shipping emissions (considering factors like distance and weight). Based on these estimates, we invest a portion of every sale into groundbreaking carbon removal projects with the hope of reducing our footprint and creating a positive impact with every purchase.
We will always be committed to sourcing our food from sustainable and small-batch makers.
Many of the small businesses we support go above and beyond to reduce their carbon footprint and create a positive impact with their food. More than 2/3 of our vendors are also certified as a B Corp, Organic, and/or a member of 1% for the Planet. Supporting them supports their local food system and often will allow them to support additional causes through their own work. We source from our community in Maine whenever possible, decreasing the number of miles travelled and increasing our local impact.
The carbon footprint associated with each of our products and their transportation to our office is compensated for as part of our annual certification.
